Marshall, TX – In celebration of Black History Month, Wiley University is proud to host a special debate event on Thursday, February 13th, 2025, at the Old Harrison County Courthouse. This free event, open to the public, continues the proud legacy of the Great Debaters, an iconic forensics society that has inspired generations.
The Great Debaters were led by Melvin B. Tolson, a professor and coach who took his team to national prominence in the 1930s, fighting against racial inequality and proving that intellectual debate could be a powerful tool for social change. This event honors Tolson’s vision and the lasting impact of the Denzel Washington & Melvin B. Tolson Forensics Society at Wiley University.
“The Judge is God,” said the Great Debaters, encapsulating the respect and reverence for the craft of debate. Coach Mack shared, “I am very proud of our senior debaters. The Great Debater legacy still stands, and they are a great representation of our history. It’s an honor to continue the spirit of debate in Marshall, TX.”
“I wouldn’t be here without the Denzel Washington & Melvin B. Tolson Forensics Society,” said Reality Edwards, a senior debater. “I am grateful for the opportunity to continue our great legacy as the Great Debaters.”
Aaron Jones, another senior debater, added, “We stand on the shoulders of giants. This is a great way to celebrate our history.”
This event invites both the university community and the public to witness the ongoing tradition of intellectual excellence, as the debate team continues to inspire and challenge with their eloquence and determination.
