Marshall, TX - The Great Debaters successfully closed their Fall 2023 season with a series of wins at the 2023 Texas Christian University tournament. The tournament was the first time TCU hosted since campus shutdowns due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Wiley Great Debaters traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, with five students and enthusiastically represented the institution as the Wiley College Great Debaters for the last time. On November 3, 2023, Wiley College changed to Wiley University and will now offer graduate programs.
The team eagerly made its mark at the tournament under the direction of former Great Debater Coach Ernest Mack 16’. "The spirit of the historic Great Debaters was demonstrated this semester with exemplary performances. The students were eager to showcase at this tournament to signal the close of the Melvin B. Tolson/Denzel Washington Forensics Society at Wiley College and the beginning of the Wiley University chapter.” - Coach Ernest Mack, Director of Melvin B. The roster of student participants brought home several wins for the institution, including:
1st Place for Poetry Interpretation-Debater Isaiah Phillips 25’
2nd Place for Prose Interpretation- Debater Andre Randle Jr 27’.
1st Place for Duo- Debaters Reality Edwards 25’ and Isaiah Phillips 25’.
3rd Place for Impromptu Speaking- Debater Reality Edwards 25’.
The Great Debaters will host their next event as part of Wiley University’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Events during the week of January 15, 2024.
