A Message to Our Wiley University Community From Dr. Herman J. Felton, Jr., Ph.D., J.D., President and CEO

Dear Campus Community,

I hope this message finds you well. As we reflect on the recent election, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the historic significance of this event and the important role each of us plays in our Democracy.

While the outcome may not align with the hopes and dreams of everyone in our community, it is crucial to remember that expressing our choice through the vote is the essence of democratic participation. The majority has spoken, and this election exemplified the workings of our democratic system—an experiment in which every citizen had the opportunity to exercise their inalienable right to vote based on their beliefs and ideals.

It is easy to celebrate the democratic process when the results favor our perspectives, but true respect for democracy requires us to honor it at all times. This means respecting the outcomes, engaging in constructive dialogue, and continuing to advocate for the values we hold dear. Our commitment to democracy must extend beyond the ballot box; it involves listening to one another, understanding differing viewpoints, and working collaboratively towards a shared vision for our community.

As we reflect on the decision of the majority, we have witnessed a powerful message emerge: students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) can aspire to and achieve the highest offices in our land, regardless of race or gender. This realization is not only a testament to the progress we have made but also a reminder of the pivotal role HBCUs play as launching pads for change and transformation in our nation.

The legacy of HBCUs is rich with stories of resilience, leadership, and excellence. They have nurtured countless individuals who have gone on to shape our society, advocating for justice and equality, some of them emitting from right here at Wiley University.  As we consider these achievements, let us also recognize that our journey is far from complete. The barriers that remain can be dismantled by the voices and actions of empowered students who dare to dream.

In these times, I encourage you to hold onto hope and optimism. As citizens of this nation, we have the power to influence the future. Our collective efforts, fueled by passion and purpose, can pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable society. Let us remember the words of Isaiah 40:31: "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." This scripture reminds us that with perseverance and faith, we can rise above challenges and achieve greatness.

As we move forward, let the words of our Alma Mater resonate in our hearts: "Go forth inspired, with glorious deeds to do." In the spirit of those who have come before us, together,  let us embrace the opportunities before us, uplift each other, and strive to leave a lasting impact on our communities and our nation.
