The Tolson Society
The Tolson Society is named for Professor Melvin B. Tolson

Dr. Tolson is an American Author, Writer, and Poet, and Wiley University professor. His seminal former works include:

-

"Melvin B. Tolson was a luminary in African-American literature. His poetry, both playful and intellectually sophisticated, resonated with the complexities of race and social justice. His words, like brushstrokes on a canvas, painted vivid pictures of struggle, resilience, and hope. Beyond poetry, Tolson was a debate coach who led a team that shattered barriers by engaging in interracial college debates against white institutions in the segregated South. Their courage and eloquence paved the way for change. In 2007, Denzel Washington portrayed Tolson’s remarkable journey in the film 'The Great Debaters.' The movie showcased the power of words, resilience, and the pursuit of justice."

Inspired by the Harlem Renaissance, a community of Black Thought and Experience,

codified through writing, music, dance, theater, and activism, The Tolson Society offers students a unique experience that centers on a pre-selected book, and a guided reading engagement by Wiley University’s 17th President and CEO Herman J. Felton, Jr., and discussion on topics that matter.

This year’s selection is
"Just Mercy," by Bryan Stevenson
The Tolson Society will convene to discuss and think together about the topics brought forth in the reading and current events. Students can obtain a free copy of the book by completing the request:

There is an incredible opportunity for us to see ourselves in one another.

“There is an incredible opportunity for us to see ourselves in one another and therefore connect to one another’s humanity. We are living in a time that increasingly calls us to see people as the other, the enemy, reducing our willingness to hold true to God’s call… to love one another as he loves us. It is at this point we gather together to connect, and interrogate what we know and we wish to know. In the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance, The Tolson Society offers place of rebirth for ideas and behaviors that worked well for Black people and the world.”
