A Legacy of Excellence in Forensics and Public Speaking
Our History
Wiley University's debate legacy began in 1924 under the leadership of Professor Melvin B. Tolson. His commitment to fostering intellectual excellence led to a decade of undefeated debates against top institutions such as Fisk, Morehouse, and Howard University. In 1930, Wiley made history by participating in the first interracial debate in the South, breaking barriers in higher education and competitive speech.
One of the most famous alumni of the Wiley Debate Team is Dr. James Farmer Jr., recruited at just 14 years old. Farmer, who would later become a Civil Rights leader and co-founder of CORE (Congress of Racial Equality), honed his oratory skills under Tolson’s guidance.
The Great Debaters
Wiley University’s debate history gained national attention with the 2007 film The Great Debaters, starring Denzel Washington. The film highlights the 1935 debate victory over the University of Southern California, showcasing the power of argumentation and intellectual courage.
