For Immediate Release

Marshall, TX

Wiley University supports its mission of social good and leadership by offering a four-year scholarship for selected students. The scholarship is named after activist, and Wiley University alum Heman Marion Sweatt ’34. Through generous support, the University has awarded almost $250,000 in scholarships to Heman Sweatt Scholars over the past two years.

The 2023 Heman Sweatt Scholars application process will close on June 11, 2023. Students selected for the 2023 Heman Sweatt Scholars program will be notified by June 21, 2023. Awardees can receive a scholarship of up to $17,500 (tuition, room, and board) for four years to attend Wiley University and support their social good projects.

“The past two cohorts have been incredible. Working with the Heman Sweatt Scholars has been a wonderful experience and an opportunity to explore social issues concerning them and how they want to generate impact. Heman Sweatt Scholars have engaged voters’ rights, home/houselessness, mental health, and more. I am excited to see what new topics our scholars are interested in exploring and impacting.” – Dr. Keyona White, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice/Co-Executive Director of the Heman Sweatt Center for Social Good and Leadership.

To become a Heman Sweatt Scholar, applicants must have applied to Wiley University, have a 3.75 g.p.a., and complete a one-page essay about their interest in social issues and leading change. Heman Sweatt Scholars have access to training, special events, and engagement with other scholars through our funding partner Strada Education Foundation.

Wiley University is committed to continuing its tradition of social good. “The institution has a long tradition of producing social good advocates. As the academic home of such global changemakers as Heman Marion Sweatt (Sweatt v. Painter, University of Texas law school desegregation United States Supreme Court), James L. Farmer (founder of CORE), and Opal Lee (Grandmother of Juneteenth), we are uniquely positioned to inspire students to be aware and generate impact through social good and leadership.” – Dr. Tashia Bradley, COO.

Persons interested in applying to or giving to the program can contact Dr. Tashia Bradley at tbradley@wileyc.edu.
