FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WILEY UNIVERSITY APPOINTS MONTGOMERY as HEAD VOLLEYBALL COACH

MARSHALL, Texas - Wiley University announces it has appointed Obadiah Montgomery as head volleyball coach effective immediately.

Montgomery has gained valuable coaching experience since graduating from Tougaloo College in 2019, including last season as assistant coach for the Lady Wildcats. She helped develop a team that featured seven freshmen, including All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Honorable Mention Brayleigh Mitchell.

“I’m ecstatic to have this opportunity,” Montgomery said. “I want to use my platform to encourage our female student-athletes that they can make it and persevere in life. Sometimes life can take an unexpected turn but I’m going to do the best I can with the opportunity.”

Before Wiley, Montgomery was an assistant coach at her alma mater, tutoring All-GCAC Honorable Mention Bailey Jones. She also previously served as an assistant coach at Brandon High School and was head volleyball coach at Brandon Middle School in Mississippi.

In her four years at Tougaloo, Montgomery was a dual-sport athlete - playing both volleyball and basketball. As a middle-blocker, she led the Lady Bulldogs in blocks in three of her four seasons and led the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference in 2017. In 2018, Montgomery earned All-GCAC Second Team. She was an All-Tournament team selection in 2017. On the basketball court, she led Tougaloo in blocks and finished second in the GCAC with 27 in 2018-19.

“Obadiah Montgomery is a determined and ambitious woman,” said Dr. Tashia Bradley, Wiley University Chief Operating Officer. “Being a former athlete, she knows what it takes to succeed. I believe that will help her develop her players into successful women on and off the court. I’m excited to see where she takes the program.”

Since the start of the new millenia, the Wiley University volleyball program has been a force to be reckoned with. It won the Red River Athletic Conference regular season title in 2008 and 2018. The Lady Wildcats made six conference championship match appearances - winning the title in 2008 and 2018. They reached the semifinals in 13 seasons. Montgomery hopes she can not only return the program to that level of success but take it further.
