A Week in 'Purple Paradise' will feature host of anticipated events

The students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of Wiley College are in celebratory mode as they prepare to observe Homecoming 2012 Sunday, October 28 through Sunday, November 4. The theme for this year’s homecoming is “Purple Paradise.” And the slate of activities planned for a week in “Purple Paradise” has everyone anticipating one of the best events to date.
Homecoming 2012 will open with a 10 a.m. worship service Sunday, October 28 in the Julius S. Scott Sr. Chapel. The worship service will be followed by a talent show at 6:30 p.m. that will feature a performance by Crystal Aikin, a national recording artist who won season one of the BET singing competition, “Sunday’s Best.” This event will also take place in the Chapel.
Wednesday, October 31 at 12 p.m. Wiley will host the Taste of Wiley in the Freeman P. and Carrie E. Hodge Center. Always a fun treat for all, the event will feature favorite dishes of faculty, staff, and students.
A major highlight for Homecoming 2012 will be the Consecration of the Haywood L. Strickland Living Learning Center which opened its doors to house students in August. This event is set for Friday, November 2 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel. Tours of the Strickland Living Learning Center will follow the 11 a.m. service.
The Miss Wiley Coronation for Senior Monica Saenz will take place Friday at 7 p.m. in the Chapel.
Other highlights scheduled for the week of celebration include the President’s Blues Concert, an annual show that this year will feature renowned recording artist Mel Waiters. “The President’s Blues Concert is always a highly anticipated event,” said Dr. Joseph L. Morale, Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Services and Chair of the Homecoming Planning Committee. “Everyone looks forward to greeting President Strickland and enjoying a great concert. And we know Mel Waiters will give us a wonderful show.” Mel Waiters will perform at the East Texas Conference Center Saturday, November 3 at 9 p.m.
The following events are also scheduled for Saturday, November 3: High School Day at 8 a.m. in the Hodge Center, the annual homecoming parade at 10 a.m. that will begin from the Hodge Center, and the big 2 p.m. showdown basketball game at Alumni Gymnasium.
