GREAT DEBATERS WIN FIRST TOURNAMENT OF 2012-2013 SEASON

The Melvin B. Tolson/Denzel Washington Forensics Society opened its 2012-2013 season with a resounding win of the University of Houston Pussycat Swing Tournament September 7-9, 2012. The team won the overall sweepstakes, debate sweepstakes, and took third place in the individual sweepstakes. The team excelled in every event it entered and brought home 43 awards. Twelve schools competed from four states.
Director of Forensics Coach Christopher Medina credits this year’s opening success to the students’ discipline and to their adherence to a rigorous summer preparation schedule. Mr. Medina said this year’s team is being coached by a larger staff. Individual results from the 10th Annual Pussycat Swing are as follows: Ailey Pope, a senior from Kansas City, MO, tournament champion in Persuasive Speaking in the University of Houston(UH)portion of the swing, tournament champion in Persuasive Speaking in the Louisiana State University( LSU) portion of the swing, fifth place in Extemporaneous Speaking in the UH portion of the swing, and semi-finalist in International Public Debate Association( IPDA) debate in the UH portion of the swing. Chad Mossman, a senior from Houston, TX, tournament champion in Impromptu Speaking in the LSU portion of the swing, second in Impromptu Speaking in the UH portion of the swing, and quarterfinalist in National Parliamentary Debate Association ( NPDA) debate in the UH portion of the swing. Jai Douglas, a senior from Edmond, OK, second in Lincoln-Douglas debate in the LSU portion of the swing and quarterfinalist in NPDA debate in the UH portion of the swing. T.J. Reed, a freshman from Memphis, TN, semi-finalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate in the LSU portion of the swing, third in Impromptu Speaking in the UH portion of the swing, fourth in Extemporaneous Speaking in the UH portion of the swing, and quarterfinalist in NPDA debate in the UH portion of the swing. Tyler Butler, a sophomore from Katy, TX, quarterfinalist in NPDA debate in the UH portion of the swing, and fourth in Impromptu Speaking in the UH portion of the swing. Farah Habad, a freshman from Union City, CA, third in Programmed Oral Interpretation in the UH portion of the swing, second in Poetry in the LSU portion of the swing, and fifth place in Duo Interpretation in the LSU portion of the swing. Rayla Crawford, a senior from Houston, TX, fourth in Poetry in the UH portion of the swing, fourth in Impromptu Speaking in the LSU protion of the swing, seventh in Dramatic Interpretation in the UH portion of the swing, and seventh in Dramatic Interpretation in the LSU portion of the swing. Drake Pough, a sophomore from Union City, CA, third in Dramatic Interpretation in the LSU portion of the swing, fourth in Prose in the LSU portion of the swing, fifth in Duo Interpretation in the LSU portion of the swing, fifth in Prose in the UH portion of the swing, and sixth in Dramatic Interpretation in the UH portion of the swing. DeAnthony Goodson, a junior from Dallas, TX, second in Dramatic Interpretation in the UH portion of the swing. Sadiq King, a freshman from Magnolia, DE, third in Poetry in the UH portion of the swing and third in Programmed Oral Interpretation in the LSU portion of the swing. Dominick Taylor, a junior from St. Peters, MO, sixth in Duo Interpretation in the UH portion of the swing. Eric Robinson, a freshman from Fort Worth, TX, sixth in Duo Interpretation in the UH portion of the swing and sixth in Prose in the LSU portion of the swing. Austin Ashford, a freshman from Union City, CA, second in Prose in the UH portion of the swing and third in Prose in the LSU portion of the swing. Leon Moukendi, a freshman from Brazzaville, Congo, fourth in Informative Speaking in the LSU portion of the swing.
